New Moon in Cancer: Mothering the Soul

All of life is cyclic. There are cycles and cycles within cycles. There is Divine Order in the Cosmos. We are a microcosm of this magnificence. Thus, we are Divine Order.

There are countless auspicious moments in which to begin anew. We are presented with opportunity to consciously direct our attention to those realms of the psyche which have been hiding from us, those areas of self which are difficult to fathom. This deeply buried psychic material offers us tremendous occasion for evolution and transformation. Beneath that which we shun within ourselves, lies gold and opulence of buried treasure.

Within the dark quietude of the New Moon, there is revelation; private and deep.

The New Moon in Cancer arrives on Monday, June 22 at 2:34 PM, Eastern Daylight Time.

The Sun entered the sign of Cancer on June 21 at 1:45 AM, Eastern Daylight Time. This precise moment in time marks the Summer Solstice, the pinnacle of the Sun's northern journey, the longest day of the year. Solstice means Standing-Still-Sun. We are graced with a prominent light force that assists us in clarity of consciousness. From this point, we begin the slow journey toward increasing darkness, where the interior of our lives is once again the primary focus as the days ever so gradually become shorter. The Summer Solstice is known from ancient times as Midsummer's Eve. This sacred pagan holiday was celebrated in recognition of the Nature Deities and Spirits, felt to be ever more present as the visible and invisible realms temporarily merge as one. This prolific interval allows greater access to the Magical Mysteries of the Universe.

Following the Sun's entry into Cancer, the Moon is close behind. Today they form a sacred union. The marriage of Sun and Moon each month portends birth. We have embarked upon another journey within our psyches. A realm of our life anticipates beginning anew. As Sun and Moon emerge into Cancer, Pluto, indicative of the karmic path as evolution, forms a challenging T-Square to Moon and Sun, indicating that at this time, we are being called to make evolutionary steps beyond the comfort zone of our emotional boundaries.

The Sun has completed his journey through Gemini and has stepped through the gateway of the fluctuating liquid milieu of Cancer. Our collective ego is shifting consciousness from air; intellectual, social, communicative, compromising and relational, to that of water; emotional, private, vulnerable, receptive and empathic.

Cancer the Crab, ruled by the Moon, is a feminine water sign containing qualities of sensitivity, nurturance, protectiveness and tenacity. Also known as Moon-Child, Cancer represents The Divine Feminine, The Great Mother, the primordial and instinctual depths of feeling, emotion and matriarchal consciousness. Considered the most emotionally sensitive of all the signs, Cancer possesses tenderness as well as tenacity. The crab in nature exhibits a tough shell surrounding a tender and vulnerable interior. The protection of self and loved ones is inherent to the Cancerian nature, a sense often demonstrated by their tremendous need for home, family and security. As they are so receptive and attuned to the underpinnings of human needs within any environment, it is essential that they have a safe and comforting home in which to retreat from the world.

This past week offered plenty of watery activity as storms flourished. Rains made intermittent appearances, paving the way with nourishment, creating earthly canals for our sojourn through the sign of Cancer. Falling rain, propelled the influx of Cancer, inspiring emotional flow. As rain quenches and nourishes the earth; tears cleanse and purify the Soul.

During the New Lunar Phase, when we cannot see the Moon, she is deeply residing within. Our Soul is primed for subjective awareness of the internal process. We are being called to take the less traveled road, to embark on a new phase of the journey.

The key to our unfolding is receptivity: the quintessential quality of The Divine Feminine. There is nothing to do at this time. We are human beings, being human. Grant yourself permission to just be. When we are present and receptive to life, our deepest desires are fulfilled.

The Cancer cycle invokes and inspires emotional awareness. The time is optimal for self nurturing, nurturing of others, and emotional release. Feelings are the language of the Soul. When we refuse them entry, when we fear their expression, we greatly inhibit our spiritual growth, becoming blocked and melancholy.

The New Moon has arrived in our natal chart in an area beckoning for release. Where ever this may be, whatever she may touch, there is intimate longing for new expression and allowance of the tender vulnerable aspects of our being to be held; with intention, with recognition, with love.

The human condition is one of vulnerability, yet our culture forbids this state of being. The daily collective spin constantly promotes the perpetuation of defensiveness and invincibility. Vulnerability is not weakness; it is strength. When we accept our own vulnerability, we pave the way for compassion toward our fellow human beings. As we commune with the most delicate part of our essence, we commune with The Divine.

Light a candle to The Blessed Mother. Create a drawing of your deepest feelings. Adopt a hermit crab. Envision your great-great grandmother swimming naked in the sea.

Wrap your arms around you. Tell someone you care.

Only let the moving waters calm down;
and the Sun and Moon will be reflected
on the surface of your being.

For it is in the giving that we receive.
